Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations (AKMED), active within the Vehbi Koç Foundation since 1995, has been supporting, in conformity with its scope of foundation, the scientific studies for researching historic, archaeological and other cultural assets of the Mediterranean areas of Anatolia, their unveiling, documentation, restoration and conservation as well as evaluations of their relations with other Mediterranean cultures.

The Institute provides financial and moral support for the excavations and surveys in the region and especially to the master’s and doctoral projects of young scholars. In addition, the Institute serves scholars interested in the Mediterranean areas of Anatolia with its two periodical publications, Adalya and Anmed, as well as other publications.

AKMED plans to organize a symposium titled “International Young Scholars Conference I: Mediterranean Anatolia” to be held in Antalya in November 2009, bringing together Turkish and foreign young scholars who are studying Lycia, Pamphylia, Pisidia and Cilicia.

The symposium is open to master’s and doctoral students preparing their theses on the historical geography, history, archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics and art history of these regions covering a time span from prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages, or those young scholars who have just finished their dissertations and have been appointed to academic positions. The candidates should fill in the attached application form and submit it by e-mail or fax by 15 April 2009 at the latest.
